Suspect in New Mexico Car Accident Avoids Police

In New Mexico, as in other parts of the country, car accidents occur every day, and each one has different circumstances surrounding it. A recent accident has the New Mexico State Police searching for a suspect who allegedly left the scene of a fatal automobile accident in the city of Portales in June.

Last month, Jose Calderon, 25, was identified as a suspect who fled the scene of an automobile wreck in Portales, New Mexico. Police indicated that Calderon fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a passenger with severe head injuries, and another passenger who had perished in the crash.

Although, at the time of writing, Calderon remains at large, the New Mexico State Police recently announced that warrants had been issued for his arrest. Prosecutors indicated that Calderon faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular homicide, possession of a firearm by a felon, great bodily injury by vehicle, evidence of financial responsibility and drivers to be licensed.

When You Are Injured in a Car Accident

Many people who are involved in car accidents do not realize that they may be implicated in legal proceedings that seek to identify the at-fault party. As well, those involved in car crashes are often shocked and emotional and may say more than they should at the scene, or give a ‘res gestae’ statement, which can later be admissible in trial.

For these reasons it is important to seek professional legal advice before you comment on the circumstances surrounding the accident.

When you have been injured in a car accident that was caused by another party’s negligence, you may be entitled to financial compensation for your medical care, lost income or wages, pain and suffering, mental and emotional anguish, or loss of bodily function.

Although the negligent party’s insurance company may contact you directly, remember that they do not have your best interests at heart – they are usually looking to settle your accident claim for a far less than what you may be entitled to.

In Texas and New Mexico, our personal injury attorneys are experienced in representing victims of automobile accidents, and will help to protect your best interests.
